Save or Splurge? Oversized Blazers
I’ve been loving the oversized suiting and blazer trend this spring and I’m so glad it isn’t going away anytime soon! When I first thought about buying into the trend, I was a bit hesitant because let’s face it, I don’t go into an office…ever! Why would I need a suit? But I quickly remembered one of the big reasons I love fashion, which is to experiment and have fun! One thing I’ve learned over the years is to not let your surroundings or lifestyle dictate how you dress. Sure, I may not go into an office for work anymore, but that doesn’t mean I can’t wear a blazer with my favorite pair of jeans on the weekends or a pair of trousers with a tank and heels for date night! It can be easy to let our lifestyle define how we dress, but fashion is an amazing way to express yourself creatively and show the world who you are. Wear what brings you joy and makes you feel confident!
Okay, now that I got that off my chest, let’s talk about blazers! In one of my recent posts I talked about the very first blazer I bought at J. Crew when I was 18 and how it got me through so many important moments as I went off to college and entered the working world. It was actually a boyfriend blazer and had a pretty boxy silhouette that hit me right at my hips, so it’s kinda fun to see the oversized blazer trend making a comeback this season. Blazers a classic wardrobe staple, but it’s important to know when to save and when to splurge when it comes to trends. By nature, trends are usually here for a moment and then it’s onto the next big thing. My advice is to go with your gut and determine how much a trend speaks to you. Sometimes you just know immediately when you love a piece and know you’ll wear it a lot. It’s those moments when it might make sense to splurge, especially if it’s a classic item like a blazer that you can mix and match throughout your wardrobe.
For me, I decided to go the “save” route when buying this oversized blazer because I wanted to see how long the trend sticks around for before investing more $$$ into a higher quality blazer. I bought this one from Missguided a couple of months ago for around $50 and as I’ve said many times before, you get what you pay for. The stitching, fabric, and overall construction of this blazer are pretty poor, but it doesn't bother me too much because I didn’t spend an arm and a leg on it. I also went into the purchase with pretty low expectations 😉 After watching lots of shows from Fashion Month and viewing so many gorgeous fall collections, I now know that blazers are definitely here to stay as we head into the fall season! For the last 5 years or so, I’ve been dying to buy a blazer from Veronica Beard. Working at Nordstrom for so many years definitely gave me a front row seat to so many designers and the opportunity to play dress up basically on a daily basis! I quickly figured out which brands were my favorite and eagerly awaited shipments of their new collections each month. VB’s quality is impeccable and I love how classic their silhouettes are but how they always put a modern twist on them. I actually saw one from their pre-fall collection photoshoot that I absolutely fell in love with! I’m really hoping I can get it when it becomes available 😍
Knowing when to save or splurge on clothing (or handbags and shoes!) can be tricky; there’s usually some trial and error involved until you feel things out and hone in on what speaks to you. As long as you stay true to yourself, you can do no wrong! Try saving on trends that likely won’t be around for more than a couple of seasons, like crop tops or trouser shorts, and splurge on the trends/pieces that you can wear longer than a year and get more use out of.
I hope this post gave you some insight into my shopping process and how you can decide whether to save or splurge! Do you like the save/splurge concept? Let me know which topic or trend I should cover next! xo
