This past Saturday Freddy and I drove up to Sedona to take some blog pictures and it ended up being so much fun! I have always enjoyed making the almost 2-hour drive up north to take in the sights of the gorgeous red rocks and get a taste of cooler weather. In our case it was incredibly cold (in the low 50’s) and I didn’t feel completely prepared clothing-wise, but I sucked it up for the few hours we were there. Freddy and I had been talking about going to Sedona to take some bohemian-inspired pictures ever since I bought this maxi skirt a couple of months ago. I bought it on my birthday and it’s completely out of the realm of what I typically wear, but as we were walking past Anthropologie that day, I saw this skirt on the mannequin and felt drawn to it and so inspired by it! I used to shop at Anthro and Free People almost regularly when I was in college, which is when I was very much into boho style, and this skirt almost feels like a refined version of my former boho days. It brings me a sense of nostalgia and I knew that I wanted to take some really awesome photos in this skirt to celebrate that!

We finally had a free weekend to go up north to take these photos, but in the days leading up to it I had started to make up excuses as to why we maybe should take pictures locally instead. I felt like I had a lot to do around the house and figured it would make more sense to drive 20 minutes and take pictures in the desert versus 2 hours to the red rocks. But ultimately we had a specific, creative vision for this bohemian look and I think we would have felt like we cheated ourselves if we didn’t follow through, and I’m so happy that we stayed true to what we had intended all along! Isn’t it funny how it can be easier to make excuses not to do something that to put in the work and just do the thing? I was reminded that there aren’t any loopholes when you’re trying to achieve or create something, and dreams don’t work unless you do. Making the trip up to Sedona was a great reminder for me that it’s totally worth it when you put in the effort and follow the dream/vision that’s been laid on your heart.

One of my favorite aspects of being a blogger is dreaming up content and imagining everything that happens in between the initial concept to the end result. What clothing item will spark inspiration for my next post? What story is the outfit telling? What setting/scenery makes the most sense? What sort of editing would compliment the overall tone of the photo? For this shoot in particular, the skirt definitely served as the main piece of inspiration and I ran with it from there. The skirt was styled in-store and online with a black top, but I knew I wanted to do something a bit more playful, which is why I chose this graphic tee with lyrics from one of my favorite 80’s songs. I kept the accessories minimal and wore black ankle boots and a black felted hat to add to the boho vibe of the outfit. This skirt is like a work of art with the subtle velvet piping, ruffles and floral design, and I plan to wear for many years to come.

In my instagram bio, you’ll notice my tag line “Imagine, Create, Inspire”. This was my purpose statement that I developed during my last year at FIDM almost a decade ago, which outlined my process for creating art. I felt that it truly encompassed the work that I was creating and the feeling I wanted to evoke with those who viewed my work. It all starts with the imagination, dreaming up a concept or an idea, then you have to put those ideas into action and create the product. My goal was to inspire others with that product and hope that they would walk away feeling uplifted, excited and moved. I had forgotten about this purpose statement until recently when I was looking back through old projects, and realized how much it still resonates with me today and what I want to achieve with my blog. This post was the first one in a long time where I felt like I had truly thought out all aspects of it from idea to completion, and I had forgotten how much fun it is to let my creative mind run wild. I’m excited to continue on this path with creating content that helps you feel inspired, no matter what’s happening in your life. Thank you for being on this journey with me, I am so grateful for you! xo
