How To Style The Maxi Skirt Trend In 2023

It’s “the year of the maxi skirt” according to British Vogue and I’m here for it! I guess that means I should bring this skirt on our London trip in April if I want to make a good impression 😉 I remember in the early 2010s when maxi skirts and dresses were really popular - I had so many different styles in my closet, but I’m glad I didn’t hang onto any of them because the maxi skirts for 2023 are way cuter! While this trend was primarily seen on the runways for women’s spring 2023 ready-to-wear collections, it seems like it’s going to be a theme into the fall season as well. On the runways we saw maxi skirts take many different forms and fabrics, from fitted silhouettes to flowy denim options. There’s no limit to where you can go with this trend, but when I spotted this satin maxi skirt with the thigh-high slit it was an immediate ‘add to cart’ moment.

This ochre color is what initially drew me to this skirt - a beautiful neutral that has a lot of versatility and the shine of the satin fabric is so pretty! I also loved the sophistication and ease of the slip skirt silhouette. It has such gorgeous movement and is incredibly comfortable thanks to the subtle stretch of the elastic waistband. I definitely plan to wear this into the warmer spring months of March and April with a different top, but since it’s pretty cold right now I opted for this cable knit sweater and suede ankle boots. I finished it off with my Polène crossbody bag in a light blush shade that works so well with this neutral outfit.

The key to wearing maxi skirts, especially if it isn’t quite floor length like the one I’m wearing, is to make sure that you don’t have a gap between the hem of the skirt and the top your shoes. This will throw off the elongated lines that a maxi skirt offers and will cut you off where your skin is showing. The ankle boots I’m wearing with this outfit just barely work with this look, but a pair of calf or knee-high boots would work perfectly with a skirt style like this.
