My Favorite Shows From New York Fashion Week 2022

It’s that time of year…Fashion Week is here! 😍 I have never done a blog post covering any of the major fashion week runway shows, so I figured why not start now?! When I worked in designer apparel and handbags at Nordstrom, I remember eagerly awaiting all of the fall and spring fashion shows to see the latest collections from my favorite designers. I loved talking about fashion week with my coworkers and customers, getting so excited about the merchandise that would be arriving in our store. If you read my post last week, you already know all of the spring trends that I’m excited about this season, which is what inspired me to write a series of blog posts for fashion week! Starting today, I’ll be doing a weekly post recapping my favorite shows from New York, London, Milan, and Paris 🤩 Keep in mind, these shows are for Fall 2022 collections (fashion is always a season ahead!) so even though I’m living in the moment for spring, I’ve definitely got my eye on what’s to come for fall and I’m already loving what I’m seeing! It’s also really interesting to see some spring trends take on a new life for fall throughout a lot of the collections that debuted this week - I’ll explain more below.

Carolina Herrera

This show was hands down my favorite one of all and I can’t contain my excitement any longer - I HAVE to talk about it! What struck me about this collection was the drama in every look that went down the runway. I was at a loss for words and just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, it kept getting better! I was so moved by this collection - it has me ready to skip over spring and head straight into fall. For starters, I loved the bold, punchy colors shown throughout the different looks - striking hues like violet, marigold, and magenta made such a statement as they strutted down the runway. I also enjoyed seeing multiple black and white looks, which is a continuation of the spring trend! The details really captivated me as well, like statement sleeves, flowing ruffles, and voluminous skirts - I’m so ready to buy a blouse with giant puffy sleeves after seeing this show 😂 I noticed two other current spring trends that got a bit of an update for fall: instead of bralettes being worn with blazers and trousers I saw more fitted corsets, and fringe took on a new form with feather details. One thing is for certain though, suiting isn’t going anywhere anytime soon and you can definitely expect to see some gorgeous fall suiting options hit stores later this year. Wes Gordon, creative director, did an outstanding job and really brought the “wow” factor with this collection!

Ulla Johnson

I’ve become a big fan of Ulla Johnson in recent years and her Fall 2022 collection did not disappoint! I feel like she exudes a similar effortlessness and bohemian romance to Chloé, so it only made sense that I was so into this collection! Her designs had an eclectic, boho vibe with a mix of prints, metallics, and and so many colors that varied between rich, earthy tones to more subdued neutrals like blush and heather grey. Amongst these different hues, black and white continued to make an appearance, which proves that this classic color combination never goes out of style! I honestly haven’t worn a black and white outfit in over a decade, so I need to change that this year. Similar to Carolina Herrera, ruffles could be seen throughout this collection as well, and I have a feeling that will continue into the shows at the upcoming fashion weeks! Johnson’s standout knitwear pieces, however, were the star of the show in my humble opinion. Every knit piece (sweaters, skirts, and dresses) took my breath away and had me dreaming of going on a trip to Vermont in peak fall color season! I also just loved the setting of the show and how it complimented the entire collection - the bright, airy space dotted with yellow botanical arrangements throughout - it was a pure bohemian dream.

Coach

Last but not least, I was pleasantly surprised by the collection that Stuart Vever’s designed for Coach. Going into it, I wasn’t totally sure what to expect because it had been years since I watched one of their shows, but as soon as the I saw the runway that mimicked a neighborhood and a model walking an Afghan Hound, I was so intrigued! The first few looks that went down the runway felt very “grunge”: oversized shearling coats with combat boots, snug baseball caps, and and graphic tees. But as the show progressed, the looks exuded more of a romantic vibe from the 70’s: floral shift dresses, Peter Pan collars, and t-strap pumps. The collection also featured some sweet crocheted dresses that reminded me of my grandma, but in the most affectionate way! I honestly felt like the collection took me on a rollercoaster, similar to life, full of changing moods and seasons. One minute I was looking at feminine dresses and the next I saw leather trench coats and oversized trousers. I wouldn’t say that this collection was my style or that I felt compelled to recreate any of these looks, but somehow I didn’t want the show to end; I was captivated by it.

There you have it, my 3 favorites from NYFW 😍 London Fashion Week kicks off tomorrow and I can’t wait to see what’s in store! If you’re interested in watching some of the runway shows, you can find New York here and London here, or get the full recap on the free Vogue Runway app!
